What did May sound like for me? A solid mix of old favorites and fresh releases — songs that I’ve loved for years and years and songs that I’ve only loved for a handful of days. Stream these tracks below or on Spotify.
This month, I spent a total of 30 hours on car trips: Oxford to Cleveland to Oxford to Cleveland to DC to Cleveland to Athens and finally back to Cleveland again. I found myself revisiting albums that I loved in high school, like The Airborne Toxic Event’s All At Once and Band of Horses’ Cease To Begin; driving alone is so much easier when you can settle into songs that you know every note and word of.
I also went to more shows in May than I have in recent months — thank god for summer break! The aforementioned road trip to DC was to see Frankie Cosmos and Real Estate at the 9:30 Club. It was my third time seeing Frankie, but I finally crossed Real Estate off my concert bucket list. They closed their encore with “It’s Real” and I was absolutely blown away by how much fun it was live. I also got to see Anna McClellan, Hello Shark, and Told Slant each perform solo at Mahall’s in Lakewood, Ohio. Their sets were incredibly intimate and reminded me why I enjoy their music in the first place.
Of course, 2017 has had some incredible new music this year (and we still have seven months to go!), and I’ve been excited to add fresh tracks to my rotation. Notable picks include Pet Symmetry’s “You & Me & Mt. Hood” (off Visions, released May 26) and Big Thief’s “Mythological Beauty” (from their forthcoming LP Capacity, out June 9).
